PROMINENT EAR

An otoplasty (aesthetic ear operation) is done on prominent ears in order to set them back closer to the head. An ear appears prominent or protruding if it projects more than 15-20 mm. A child with prominent ears is often the target of invidious comparison to such characters and must carry the burden of an "unacceptable" evaluation from peers, a burden that may be carried into adulthood.

Since ears are nearly fully developed by the fourth to the sixth year, surgical correction can be effectively performed at this age to avoid later emotional trauma. Adults can be operated on at any age. Prominent ear operation involves working on the cartilage that gives structure to the ear in order to correct ear prominence.

An otoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia and usually takes 1-2 hours. Aesthetic prominent ear surgery is performed on outpatient basis in Cyprus Aesthetic Center. You can have a shower after 2 days. The incision is made behind the ear and is inconspicuous once healed. After ear surgery, a head wrap (tennis bandage) is placed to protect the ears. Once the wrap is removed in the office, patients are often asked to wear a headband for 2-4 weeks to maintain the new ear position and prevent injury particularly when sleeping.
