TREATMENT FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING

Botox is commonly performed for treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in Cyprus. I can say you are not alone because 1% of the world population has excessive sweating. This ratio is much higher in Cyprus. Botox is very effective in the treatment for excessive sweating from arm pit (axilla), palms and soles. You have to find experienced plastic surgeon or dermatologist because Botox only works when it is in right concentration and correct level of injection. It preventive action from excessive sweating continues for 4-12 months. Botox is also effective for cosmetic purposes and treatment of migraine headaches for selected patients in Cyprus Aesthetic Center.

Hyperhidrosis, which is sweating in excess of that required for normal thermoregulation, is a condition that usually begins in either childhood or adolescence. Although any site on the body can be affected by hyperhidrosis, the sites most commonly affected are the palms, soles, and axillae. Excessive sweating may be idiopathic or secondary to other diseases, metabolic disorders, febrile illnesses, thyroid disorders or medications.

Hyperhidrosis exists in 3 forms: emotionally induced hyperhidrosis (in which it affects the palms, soles, and axillae), localized hyperhidrosis, and generalized hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis often causes great emotional distress and occupational disability for the patient, regardless of the form.

Each Botox injection produces an area of anhydrosis (lack of perspiration) approximately 1.2 cm in diameter. Results in anhydrosis lasting 4-12 mo. Injections of botulinum toxin must be repeated at varying intervals to maintain long-term results.

Topical agents for hyperhidrosis therapy include topical anticholinergics, boric acid, 2-5% tannic acid solutions, resorcinol, Aluminum Chloride, potassium permanganate, formaldehyde (which may cause sensitization), glutaraldehyde, and methenamine. All of these agents are limited by staining, contact sensitization, skin irritation, or limited effectiveness. Surgical operation (Endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy) has high rates of compensatory sweating as high as 55%. When we compare other treatments Botox is fast, long lasting, well tolerated and effective therapy for excessive sweating.
